Hurricane Melissa
Category-5 Hurricane Melissa made landfall in southwestern Jamaica on October 28 and is the third strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean. It later hit Cuba as a Category-3 hurricane before continuing across the Caribbean and impacting Dominican Republic, Haiti, the Bahamas and Bermuda.
In Jamaica, Cuba and across the central Caribbean, Hurricane Melissa’s life-threatening rains triggered flash floods in low-lying areas and landslides on higher terrain. Tidal surges caused tsunami-like flooding in low-lying coastal areas, threatening lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure.
How PASTOR FRANKLIN WALLACE is supporting the Hurricane Melissa response in JAMAICA
Direct aid and rebuilding
- Emergency relief: Collect and distribute essential items such as food, water filters, hygiene kits, and shelter materials to communities affected by disasters.
- Housing construction: Organize and fund construction projects for building new homes or repairing existing ones, using both skilled and unskilled volunteers to assist with tasks like block laying, plumbing, and painting and much more
- Financial assistance: Provide direct financial aid to families in need, working through local partners to ensure the support reaches the intended recipients effectively.
Community development and social support
- Promote justice and peace: Advocate for community development and speak out against crime and injustice by working with local civil society groups to hold the government accountable for promises made to communities.
- Emotional and mental health support: Offer emotional and mental health support, which is a key focus for relief efforts, especially in the aftermath of a crisis, says Catholic Relief Services.
- Support local initiatives: Partner with local organizations and churches to implement projects that address specific community needs, such as health and community development.
